Executive-summary Federal communications commission. (continued)
A merchant ID (MID) is a unique identifier assigned to a business to process credit and debit card payments, ensuring funds are routed to the correct merchant account. Businesses get an MID automatically when they open a merchant account with a payment processor like Stripe or PayPal. To find it, check a merchant statement, a payment terminal, or log in to your online payments account; for Google Merchant Center, look on the dashboard. What a merchant ID is.
- A unique identifier: It’s a unique code assigned to your business that acts like an account number for processing transactions.
- A routing tool: The MID ensures that funds from credit and debit card payments are sent to the correct merchant account when a customer pays.
- A tool for communication: It travels with the payment information during a transaction to facilitate communication between the card issuer, payment processor, and your bank.
How to find your merchant ID.
- Merchant statement: Check your latest merchant statement; your MID is often printed on it, typically in a corner.
- Payment terminal: The ID may be listed on your physical payment terminal. Check the sides or bottom.
- Online account: Log in to your online payments portal (e.g., PayPal, Stripe) and navigate to the “Account Settings,” “Business Information,” or “Public merchant profile” section.
- Google Merchant Center: For a Google Merchant ID, it can be found on your dashboard. According to Sellbrite Help Center, “In the top-right corner of the Merchant Center dashboard, you’ll see your Merchant ID displayed next to your account name”.
Important considerations.
- Security: MIDs are sensitive and should be kept private. Never share it with unauthorized parties, and use strong security practices for your payment processor account.
- Chargebacks: A high number of chargebacks can put your MID at risk of being revoked.
- Changing providers: If you switch payment processors, you will get a new MID.
