SAVE TIME WITH THE SERIES INDEX
To find the most useful references and find them quickly you may wish to answer these questions.
Should I be using this index?
If you already have a series code, probably so. What is a series code? It’s a combination of letters and numbers used to designate a series of publications from the Census Bureau. For example, the Census Bureau uses “C22” for the Series Housing Completions.
If you don’t have the series code now, but do have a title see the introduction to the Title Index, pages 243 ff. If you have neither code nor title-or think you may need additional data products-see the introduction to the Subject Index pages 249 ff. In addition, the Product Overview, arranged by broad subject, briefly describes series-see pages 9 ff.
How can I find the series I need?
The index shows the series codes followed by the number of the abstract which describes the product issued in the series. For example, the index shows:
C22…..416
The abstract describes the content of Housing Completions.
Which series will I find here?
You will find codes listed for most publication series from the Census Bureau.
But this index excludes individual items (numbers, for example) within series. For example, it cites P-25 but not P-25,
number 1017, since the abstracts are arranged by number in the text. Neither does it include individual series of Current Industrial Reports, such as MQ-22Q and MA-39-A, since these are very numerous and arranged by number in the Manufacturing and Mineral Industries chapter.
Some series-Data Developments for instance-do not have specific letters or numbers assigned. They are known by title only, Although mainly limited to printed reports, this index also includes some references to abstracts for other media within ranges of numbers and for items out of print. In addition, for foreign trade only, the index includes all data files and microfiche that have series numbers and letters.
